Live up to

在平息印巴局势的努力中，美国敦促巴基斯坦严厉打击跨境恐怖活动。外电报道说：President Bush took a tough line toward a major ally in the war on terror Thursday, demanding that President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan "live up to his word" and crack down on extremists' cross-border attacks that could lead to war with India. 就是说美国总统要求巴基斯坦总统穆沙拉夫严守诺言，严厉打击对印巴关系造成威胁的跨境恐怖活动。这里 "live up to"就是"遵守；依照"的意思，那么live up to one's word就是"遵守诺言"的意思了。
