Wind down

4月16日，美国国务卿鲍威尔同以色列总理沙龙在耶路撒冷举行其中东之行的第三次会谈，鲍威尔称他的斡旋已经取得"进展"，巴以双方已经倾向于达成一项协议：巴勒斯坦保证结束对以色列人的袭击行动，而以色列军队将分阶段从巴控区撤军。然而，中东的局势是这么的变幻莫测，外电有报道说：Israeli forces moved into a West Bank town and four villages near Jerusalem on Tuesday - a day after Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said operations were winding down.（以色列在同一天又出动军队入侵约旦河西岸，占领了耶路撒冷附近的四个村庄。尽管先前沙龙声称对巴勒斯坦的军事打击已经有所放松。）这里，"wind down"的意思就是"放松；渐渐结束；逐步停止"。再比如：The company is winding down its business.
