Sit on one's hands

Sit on one's hands 有两个意思，一是表示“坐下来歇一会”。

Now that the guests have gone I’m going to sit on my hands while you clean up.

理解和翻译这句话时一定要十分小心，否则就会把sit on one’s hands 错译为“坐在手上”。其实它的意思与手无关，而是“坐下来歇一会”。客人来时主妇忙里忙外地操劳了半天，客人一走她就要露出真实本色，不必老是陪着笑脸，可以支使老公，自己抽空歇一下了。

故而全句的译文是：既然客人已经走了，该轮到我歇会儿了，你去洗碗。

We asked Bill for help with our project, but he sat on his hands.
这句话中的后半句并不是“他歇着不动手”的意思。原来sit on one’s hands还有“拒绝做某事”的意思。原文不是说比尔答应了不动手，而是说他根本没答应，因而应译成：我们叫比尔帮着做我们的项目，可他拒绝参加。
