 Sit on one's hands 有两个意思,一是表示“坐下来歇一会”。

Now that the guests have gone I’m going to sit on my hands while you clean up.

理解和翻译这句话时一定要十分小心,否则就会把sit on one’s hands 错译为“坐在手上”。其实它的意思与手无关,而是“坐下来歇一会”。客人来时主妇忙里忙外地操劳了半天,客人一走她就要露出真实本色,不必老是陪着笑脸,可以支使老公,自己抽空歇一下了。

故而全句的译文是:既然客人已经走了,该轮到我歇会儿了,你去洗碗。

We asked Bill for help with our project, but he sat on his hands.
这句话中的后半句并不是“他歇着不动手”的意思。原来sit on one’s hands还有“拒绝做某事”的意思。原文不是说比尔答应了不动手,而是说他根本没答应,因而应译成:我们叫比尔帮着做我们的项目,可他拒绝参加。
