Brass ring

经常可以听到人们使用brass ring这个词，大多出现在touch the brass ring, grab the brass ring 或 reach for the brass ring短语中。这些短语大约出现在20世纪70年代，时至今日它们仍被频繁使用。
Brass ring用来比喻一个你正在竭力为之拼搏的或通过努力已经实现了的的目标或奖项，同时它还可以比喻一个能够让你实现目标或夺得这种大奖的机遇。如果你了解Brass ring的来源，那么你将会认为这个比喻绝对是一个形象的比喻。
Brass ring起源于1880-1920年间，当时是狂欢活动在美国搞得最火爆的年代。其中一种活动是让骑手骑在绕着一个圆形平台不停转动的并上下起伏的木马上，平台上方不规则的挂着一些铃铛(ring), 这些铃铛多数是用钢制成的，也有少数是黄铜的(brass)。骑手希望自己骑的木马在铜铃的下方正好升到至高点，这样他们就能够摘到铜铃了。谁要是够到铜铃，就可以免费再骑一次木马。
从这个狂欢游戏不难看出brass ring 如何衍生出这个比喻意。Brass ring在这里用来比喻游戏参与者人人都可能实现的目标，只要他努力伸手去够并且有好运气。
对brass ring一词出现的时间，不同的字典有不同的说法。Merriam-Webste 10th Collegiate词典说brass ring出现在二十世纪五十年代，而Christine Ammer's 编撰的The American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms则认为19世纪晚期就出现了这个短语。两种说法相去甚远。
据目前我们掌握的材料来看，这个比喻用法在1959年首次出现， "'I guess I never got with it,' he told himself aloud, 'and the only times I saw the brass ring it was going so fast I couldn't grab it'"（《星期六晚报》），brass ring并没用引号圈起来，说明它可能是新造的词。
我们再来看看这个活动的起源。这个活动从法国传到美国，最早起源于意大利。它是意大利一种训练骑士的竞赛，这种竞赛叫carosello，也可以称做 "little war"。这种竞赛形式传到法国后变成训练男孩的活动，木马安放在平台上，男孩们骑在木马上，平台开始旋转，然后孩子们要用长矛奋力朝高高悬起的铃铛刺去。
1975年《新闻周刊》上一篇评论里的原话形象的描绘了产生brass ring一词的活动的场景：
THE GREAT FRENCH CAROUSEL ORGANS (RCA ). The plaintive melodies and the sounds of fife and drum are transformed into a joyous cascade by the pipes of the mechanical organ. No instrument could be less solemn. It's not so much the sounds of Rossini's "Thieving Magpie Overture" or a swinging "Valencia" we hear as those of children's laughter when the world was young and the brass ring there for the grabbing.
