Shares of Whirlpool Corp surged 6 percent after the appliance maker said its second-quarter earnings, excluding restructuring and one-time charges, are likely to exceed analysts' expectations by 5 cents per share.

The manufacturer and marketer of home appliances said Wednesday it expects to report second-quarter earnings of US$1.30 per share, above Thomson Financial/First Call's consensus estimate of US$1.25.

The announcement sent Whirlpool US$3.60 to close at US$63.36 Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
