Celine Dion to raise multi-millions for children's hospital

Celine Dion plans to raise $100 million Canadian (almost $65 million U.S.) for Ste-Justine's Hospital, one of the Canada's largest pediatric facilities.

The 34-year-old pop entertainer spent last Wednesday (December 18) visiting 16 sick children in the Montreal hospital, in a ward not far from where her niece Karine died about a decade ago.

The Canadian Press news service reported that Dion broke down in tears and vowed to support a campaign to help raise the millions for Ste-Justine's, which is in need of research funding, equipment, beds, and an enlarged cancer facility.

Still teary-eyed, speaking at a news conference, the singer said, "It's difficult for me. I'm speaking here as a mother."

Dion and her manager husband, Rene Angelil, will became patrons of a five-year fundraising campaign slated to begin next spring, The couple has taped two television ads asking for donations, and Dion may also record a benefit song. She has been affiliated with the hospital since her niece lost a battle against cystic fibrosis.

The Canadian government has said it will match the $100 million with an additional $300 million. Dion, who is Canada's wealthiest entertainer, also made a private undisclosed donation with husband Angelil.
