Egypt pledges $1.5 billion if World Cup bid succeeds
( 2003-12-22 10:13) (Reuters)

Egypt has pledged $1.525 billion for preparations if its bid to stage the 2010 World Cup succeeds.

The figure was given in a statement on Sunday by the bid organising committee.

Youth and Sports Minister Ali el din Hilal told a news conference Egypt's strategic geographical location, its secure political situation and hotel and media facilities made it the most suitable to host the competition.

"We were the only country to present its bid in four languages and our website has received the biggest number of visits of all the other bidders," he said.

Egypt is one of the five bidding countries which all made formal presentations to FIFA at the end of September. FIFA have designated 2010 as the first finals to be held in Africa.

The other nations bidding are South Africa, Tunisia, Libya and Morocco. South Africa, pipped at the post by Germany for the 2006 competition, have been tipped as favourites this time round. The decision will be made in May.

FIFA's inspection team, which has been visiting the candidate countries, is due in Egypt on January 23. The country plans to use 10 stadiums if the bid succeeds.
