Soccer-Deportivo coach blames defence for record Monaco win ( 2003-11-06 09:47) (Agencies) Didier Deschamps hailed Monaco's 8-3 victory in the Champions League on Wednesday as an extraordinary moment while Deportivo Coruna coach Javier Irureta blamed shocking defensive errors for a "very negative" defeat. But both coaches were at a loss to explain why so many goals were scored in a match that set a record for the competition. "It's difficult to grasp," said Deschamps. "It's an extraordinary moment to beat a side like Deportivo 8-3 in the Champions League. It's the sort of thing that is unthinkable. "It was a little bit of a strange match, 11 goals -- it's rare that happens in the Champions League," he added with a smile. "There were lots of chances and there are some evenings where everything you try succeeds. "I must say the players all started the match raring to go and I congratulate them hugely. "They played an exceptional game and carried out our attacking plans exactly. When the Spaniards came back to 4-2, the team knew how to react. "To beat the favourites in the group confirms that our team have great potential and it is something very positive for the future. I hope we will have some great tomorrows." GROUP LEADERS Monaco, beaten 1-0 in Spain by Deportivo, lead Group C with nine points followed by Deportivo on seven and PSV Eindhoven six. PSV beat AEK Athens 2-0 on Wednesday. There had previously been only one 8-3 result in the elite European competition when Lokomotiv Sofia beat Malmo in the 1964-65 European Cup first round. But this match set a record for the number of goals scored in a Champions League game. "To give away eight goals -- I don't know how to explain it," said Irureta. "It was a strange game. We had lots of chances but we made lots of terrible defensive errors and Monaco knew how to profit from them by playing very good, rapid football which gave us huge problems. "I think we were too negligent giving away five goals in first half. In the second half, we also could not find ways of countering the speed and efficiency of Monaco. "I felt very ill at ease with the football we were playing at some moments in the match. "It's a very negative result but it's only three points lost and we can recover against AEK." Deportivo are at home to AEK, who have one point, in the next round on November 25 while Monaco host PSV, who they beat 2-1 in Eindhoven.
