A thief who jumped into a river to elude police was arrested after he climbed right back out of the foul-smelling water, reports Yangtze Evening News.

Hu was attempting to steal a bicycle on Hanzhongmen Street on Monday morning when police approached, so he fled.

Zhang, a bystander, told the officers he saw Hu jump into the smelly Beilei River.

But Hu quickly climbed out again and began to vomit.

After being caught, Hu joked that he would not be in police custody if the river had not reeked so.
