China exports railway wagons to Brazil for first time
( 2003-10-23 23:58) (Xinhua)

A ship carrying 124 railway wagons left Shanghai for Brazil on Thursday, marking China's first such exports to South America.

Zhao Xiaogang, general manager of China South Locomotive and Rolling Stock Industry (Group) Corporation, the exporter, said a total of 900 wagons, worth 33 million US dollars, would be exported to Brazil by next March for the transportation of iron ore.

The wagons were manufactured by the Hunan Zhuzhou Rolling Stock Plant, a subsidiary of the corporation, in line with US standards, said Zhao. He hoped the shipment would lay a sound foundation for future efforts to the US and European markets.

More exports of Chinese-made rolling stock could be expected, he said.
