Seven killed in Kashmir wedding shootout
( 2003-10-22 13:37) (Agencies)

Gunmen wielding automatic weapons burst into a wedding party in Indian Kashmir and fired on guests, killing at least seven in what appears to be a family feud rather than separatist violence, police said on Wednesday.

The gang of seven or eight young men struck just after the guests had finished dinner on Tuesday at the reception in the Doda area, about 110 miles east of Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir state.

The bride and groom survived but four guests died on the spot and three more on their way to hospital, police said. It is not known how many people were injured.

Police said four men had already been arrested. No other details were immediately available.

Doda is one of the most violent regions in Kashmir, where Muslim separatists have been fighting Indian rule for 14 years in a bloody revolt that has killed at least 40,000 people.
