Anothe coal mine blast kills eight in N. China
( 2003-10-14 00:20) (Xinhua)

At least eight people were killed and one is missing after a coal mine gas explosion Sunday night in Baotou city of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, raising China's coal mine blast toll to 19 in a week.

The tragedy occurred at the Tailaiyao coal mine in the city's Guoqing Township, local officials said.

The explosion happened when 12 miners were working underground, killing eight and leaving one missing, while three others were rescued. Rescuers are still searching for the missing man.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

In a flooded coal mine in Dengfeng City, central China's Henan Province, 18 miners were trapped as an explosion struck the mine last Thursday. To date, four miners have been confirmed dead.

In a third coal mine explosion in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, at least seven people were killed Sunday afternoon.
