East China province shuts down 30 percent of non-coal mines
( 2003-10-11 17:05) (Xinhua)

The eastern Chinese province of Jiangxi has shut down 2,735 sub-standard non-coal mines or quarries, or 30 percent of its total non-coal mines in order to improve safety at mines.

According to the provincial authority in charge of workplace safety, the move came with the rise of workplace accidents in non- coal mines. In the first seven months, Jiangxi reported 35 deadly accidents at non-coal mines and 14 people legally responsible had been prosecuted.

In order to take precautions, the province has invested 100 million yuan (12 million US dollars) to improve workplace facilities and management, and the improvement measures have prevented 19 potential accidents, according to the authority.
