Road accidents claim 116 lives during golden week
( 2003-10-08 23:15) (Xinhua)

A total of 116 people were killed and 107 others injured during the week-long National Day holiday from Oct. 1 to 7, the Traffic Administration Bureau under the Ministry of Public Security announced on Wednesday.

The number of accidents in which killed three or more people totaled 26. But no accidents claimed the lives of over 10.

Most of the accidents were caused by motorists' failures to follow traffic rules, and adverse weather contributed, a ministry source said.

Traffic on major roads kept flowing over the holiday. Nevertheless, no serious traffic jams were reported.
