FM refutes report of US Congress committee
( 2003-10-05 09:44) (Xinhua)

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman expressed Saturday strong displeasure and resolute opposition to the interference in China's internal affairs contained in a report of the so-called US Congress-executive Committee on China.

In response to a request for comment on the committee's 2003 annual report, spokesman Kong Quan said the so-called US Congress-executive Committee on China's report distorted facts and attacked China by using the issues of human rights, religion and the Falun Gong cult in disregard of China's great achievements in the fields of human rights and legislation, which only shows the report drafter's arrogance and prejudices.

"We express strong displeasure and resolute opposition over the issue," Kong said.

The Chinese people have just celebrated the 54th anniversary of the founding of New China and the country has undergone great changes over the past 54 years, especially since the reform and opening-up drive began, he said.

The Chinese people have succeeded in fighting against severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), maintained sustained, fast and healthy economic development and continued to advance democracy and legislation steadily this year, the spokesman said.

China today is full of vitality, advancing full steam ahead. Itis a basic fact obvious to all that China's human rights conditionand legal system are now in the best period for continued development, he said.

The Chinese Government has always been dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights and basic freedom of its people of all nationalities, Kong said.

Chinese laws protect citizens' freedom of religion while prohibiting any organizations and individuals from conducting illegal and criminal activities in the name of religion, he said.

It was for the protection of basic human rights that the Chinese Government has banned the Falun Gong cult in accordance with the law, Kong said, adding that the move has been welcomed and supported by the broad masses of the people.

Kong urged US Congress and relevant organizations to focus moreon the affairs of their own country, contribute more to the mutual understanding and cooperation between China and the United States and stop interfering in China's internal affairs.

The US administrative authorities should take the solemn position of the Chinese side seriously, reject the so-called proposals set forth in the report and take effective measures to eliminate the negative impact of the report, the spokesman said.
