West-east gas pipeline commences trial operation
( 2003-10-01 11:40) (Xinhua)

The east section of the west-east gas pipeline, from Shaanxi's Jingbian County to Shanghai, starts trial operation today, warming up for the commercial operation of the pipeline slated on Jan. 1, 2004.

A grand ceremony was held by PetroChina in Jingbian, a major gas production base of the Chinese oil giant's gas-rich Changqing Oilfield.

According to PetroChina's plan, Jingbian will supply gas to the pipeline before being replaced by the Tarim basin as the gas source in the beginning of 2005, when the western section, from Xinjiang's Lunnan to Jingbian, is hooked up with the Jingbian- Shanghai section.

By far, Changqing has secured a proven natural gas geological reserve of 1.1 trillion cubic meters, 751 billion cubic meters of which are recoverable reserves. And through years of efforts, Changqing has built a yearly production capacity of 4.8 billion cubic meters, an amount which can not only satiate the existing pipelines channeling gas to Beijing, Tianjin, Xi'an, Hohhot, and Yinchuan but also the east section of the west-east gas pipeline, which may require for 2.1 billion cubic meters of gas in 2004.
