Tourists spot China's "Nessie" in Tianchi ( 2003-10-01 11:39) (Xinhua)
Several travelers claimed on Tuesday that they witnessed the legendary
mysterious monster appearing out of the Tianchi (Heaven) Lake on Changbai
Mountains in northeast China's Jilin province.
Li Xiaohe, deputy manager of the Northeast Expressway Stock Co. Ltd, said
that he saw twice a black round creature dashing quickly in the lake
respectively at 8:50 a.m. and 9;05 Tuesday when he was watching from the
northern side of Changbai Mountains with nine family members and other tourists.
According to Li, the monster, teemed China's "Loch Ness monster ", swam about
300 to 400 meters on the lake and then dived into water and the whole process
lasted roughly only one minute. The monster re-emerged at 9"Li indicated that
the visibility was very good since the weather was fine and the lake was
peaceful and calm. He claimed that his family and the other tourists all saw the
monster.
The lake is prestigious for both beautiful scenery and the legend of lake
monster, which dates back to the early 20th century. During the past two
decades, monsters appeared reportedly about 40 times and thousands of people
claimed to have seen it.
Located in northeast China's Jilin province, the 10-sq-km Tianchi Lake is the
highest volcanic lake in the nation at the height of 2,189 meters. The average
depth is around 204 meters and the deepest bottom is 373 meters below surface.
