Chinese obstetricians work to save premature quadruplets ( 2003-10-01 11:39) (Xinhua) Obstetricians started
emergency treatment on severely underdeveloped premature quadruplets after they
were sent Tuesday morning to a hospital in Changsha, capital of central-south
Hunan province.
The hospital medical team is working hard to save the babies' lives but the
current situation is tough and they are all still in critical condition, said
Gao Xirong, chief obstetrician of the Hunan Children's Hospital.
The four infants were born at 9:40 p.m. on Sept. 27 in a hospital in Luodi,
the parents' hometown in Hunan province, after 29 and a half weeks of pregnancy.
They were very weak and delicate at birth and their weight was far below normal,
ranging from 1.1 kg to 1.6 kg, said Gao.
When they were born, their body temperature was low and their lungs were
infected. The third baby is especially at risk because of a serious lung
problem, according to the hospital.
Gao said the couple, both 30 and married for six years, had taken some
fertility drugs, which might be the reason for the multiple babies. The
quadruplets likely suffered some kind of inflammation when they were still in
uterus.
The babies are now on IVs and under close monitoring.
