China fuel-oil imports down

Fuel-oil imports by China, the biggest buyer in Asia, may be 11 percent less than the government estimated this year because higher prices have prompted power plants to switch to coal.

China may import about 17 million metric tons of fuel oil this year, less than the government's quota of 19 million tons, according to a Bloomberg News survey of five trading companies and oil refiners. The government gives out import permits at the start of the year to meet domestic demand.
