( 2003-09-22 15:27) (Xinhua)

Death toll from the heavy mountain flooding late Saturday night in east China's Fujian province had risen to 10 by early Monday morning.

Rescue workers are still trying hard to find those still missing, the number of whom has not yet been confirmed.

Rainstorms pelted Songkou and Changqing towns, both in Yongtai county, at about 9:00 p.m. Saturday night, leading to heavy mountain torrents which affected 1,420 local residents.

Eighty houses were destroyed or collapsed, and another some 100 were damaged to some extent. A total of 1,000 hectares of crops have been submerged.

Primary investigation shows that the economic loss caused by the flooding amounted to approximately 80 million yuan (US$9.64 million).
