Scholastic exchanges spotlighted
( 2003-08-30 07:33) (China Daily)

The sixth Convention of Overseas Chinese Scholars in Science and Technology will be held in Guangzhou December 28-30.

Co-organized by the ministries of education, science and technology, and personnel as well as the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the municipal government of Guangzhou, the event will be jointly managed by Beijing, Shanghai, Changchun, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Chengdu, Xi'an and Suzhou.

Representatives of the co-managing cities said they anticipate the convention will be a multi-dimensional forum for scholastic exchanges, investment opportunities and research achievement commercialization.

They will also be looking to recruit experts schooled overseas to work on high-tech projects in their cities.

According to Lin Yuanhe, vice-mayor of Guangzhou and deputy director-general of the organizing committee, the convention will highlight exchanges of high- and new-tech projects along with high-calibre personnel.

The organizing committee will host an expo to showcase the achievements of returning experts who have been schooled overseas, as well as sessions for human resources recruitment and technological exchange.

As well, the committee is encouraging the maximum number of the nation's top 500 enterprises along with medium-sized and smaller enterprises to participate.

"We are confident the convention will be another successful showcase for overseas Chinese scholars to find promising employment positions or investors for their projects," said Lin.

More than 6,000 Chinese experts schooled overseas attended the previous five conventions, many of whom have returned to China for their own business or suitable job vacancies.

Official statistics indicate China has sent a total of 580,000 students to study in more than 100 countries and regions since 1978 when the nation began to reform and open up.

More than 150,000 of them have returned, while some 270,000 are still studying abroad.
