Flood-stricken farmers compensated for lost rice
( 2003-08-22 11:00) (Xinhua)

Sixty farm households in Fanqiao Township, in east China's Anhui Province, which lost their rice crops in recent flooding received gifts of rice Thursday.

These households are a small part of a total of 200,000 beneficiaries of rice donated by Hong Kong entrepreneur Li Ka-shing.

The rice, weighing a total of 2 million kg, will be distributed to 200,000 households in 29 cities and counties in Anhui, including Fuyang, Bozhou and Lu'an.

All the procedures for distributing the rice were monitored by officials from the local civil affairs departments.

Following the flooding of the Huaihe River, the province has received more than 10 million yuan (US$1.2 million) worth of donations, according to local officials.
