Cabbies pay 'patrons' to access mall ( 2003-08-21 13:30) (China Daily)
Cab drivers are giving people 2 yuan (24 US cents) to ride in their taxis in order to be allowed to wait for passengers at China World Shopping Mall. As the mall forbids taxis to enter its driveway unless they are dropping passengers off, the cabbies have come up with this creative way of getting business from the busy complex. Five or six young men can often be seen sitting idle at a garden area near the shopping complex. When an empty taxi approaches, one of them slips into it and just as quickly disembarks at the entrance to the mall. The taxi is then allowed to wait for real customers. Security guards said they had to continue enforcing the measure to keep the square from becoming jammed with vehicles, reports Beijing Star Daily. |
