Juventus too sharp for Milan in pre-season win
( 2003-08-18 10:16) (Agencies)

Goals from Alessandro Del Piero and Mauro Camoranesi gave Italian champions Juventus a 2-0 win over European champions AC Milan in the annual pre-season Luigi Berlusconi Trophy on Sunday.

Juventus fully deserved the win at the San Siro stadium and looked far sharper than Milan as they picked up their second pre-season win over their rivals after victory on penalties in the Italian Super Cup in New York earlier in the month.

Milan beat Juventus in the final of the Champions League in May, also on penalties.

Juventus coach Marcello Lippi opted to play Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Appiah ahead of Dutchman Edgar Davids and the close season signing from Brescia responded with an excellent performance, setting up the opening goal.

Appiah sliced the Milan defence open with a pin-point pass to Del Piero who coolly slotted past Milan keeper Dida in the 40th minute.

Just before the break Italy winger Camoranesi added the second with a left foot finish after David Trezeguet and Pavel Nedved had combined well down the left.

Milan's best efforts, in a disappointing performance, both came from Clarence Seedorf who tested Juve keeper Gianluigi Buffon with a long-range shot in the first half and then struck the post in the final moments with a free kick from 20 metres.

Brazilian midfielder Kaka, who should complete a move from Sao Paulo to Milan this week watched the game in the stands alongside Milan president and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

The Berlusconi Trophy, which always features Milan and Juventus, is named after Berlusconi's late father Luigi.

The Italian Serie A season starts on August 31.
