Fair aimed at helping farmers
( 2003-08-16 08:53) (China Daily)

The fourth China Changchun international agricultural and food fair, an annual promotion for agricultural technology and marketing, opened on Friday in Changchun, capital of Northeast China's Jilin Province.

Jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Changchun government, the fair aims to inform farmers of high-tech developments and promote interaction between farmers and industrialists from different regions of the country and abroad.

Changchun Mayor Zhu Yejin said: "I believe all of this will help farmers improve their income."

Yang Changzhong, a local farmer who planted 10 hectares of tomatoes, said he got the necessary information from last year's fair and earned over 30,000 yuan (US$3,627). This year he wanted to learn the most advanced technology and introduce his products to more people.

Animals and plants are the two main attractions at the fair.

More than 300 companies are participating in the week-long event, which wraps up next Thursday. Integrated agriculture, bio-technology, new technology and new breeds, green food, agricultural facilities, agricultural information technology and environmental resources are among the industries represented, said Li Wei, deputy mayor of Changchun and director of the fair.

Li said the fair also includes exhibits of famous plants and animals, seminars in practical agricultural technologies, and contract signings for several key projects.

"Farmers' most urgent demands are information and technology, so we have developed a set of new services to help them obtain what they need," said Wang Xianji, director from Chanchun Agricultural Information Centre.
