10 hurt in Israel mall suicide bombing
( 2003-08-12 15:22) (Agencies)

An apparent suicide bomber detonated an explosion outside a supermarket in central Israel Tuesday,Aug 12, shattering a summer of relative calm since a cease-fire by Palestinian militants on June 29.

Ten people were injured, one seriously, the Zaka rescue service said. Rescue workers found a body at the scene believed to be that of the bomber.

The blast sparked a large fire in the supermarket in the town of Rosh Haayin, just outside Tel Aviv. Firefighters with breathing equipment pulled casualties out of the shattered store.

Police had been on high alert in the area following warnings of an impending attack in central Israel.

Israeli government spokesman Avi Pazner condemned the "murderous attack in an Israeli town" and said he held the Palestinian leadership responsible.

"This is the result of the inaction on the part of the Palestinian Authority," he said. "They have not dismantled terrorist organizations."

Violence has fallen sharply since the main Palestinian militant groups declared a cease-fire on June 29. The last suicide attack in Israel was on July 7, when a bomber blew himself up in a house in the center of the country, killing an elderly woman.
