Two peasants punished for illegal tree-felling in E. China

Two peasants from east China's Jiangxi Province have been sentenced to six months and three months in prison respectively for felling more trees than their licenses permitted.

Cheng Deyuan and Shu Jieming, the defendants,were also fined 3, 000 yuan (361 US dollars) each, according to the People's Court of Maoyuan County, Jiangxi.

Chen and Shu claimed that it was not illegal to fell their own trees.
The two men got a license on March 15, 2002, which allowed them to fell a total of 23 cubic meters of trees, with 17 cubic meters for Cheng and six cubic meters for Shu. But they felled more than they were allowed, or 29 cubic meters more by Cheng and 25 cubic meters more by Shu, according to the court.
