Teachers needed as student numbers soar ( 2003-08-06 10:54) (China Daily)
Guangdong will have to hire 5,000 university and college teachers every year
up to 2005, when the number of students enrolled at institutions of higher
learning is expected to exceed 800,000, reports Guangzhou Daily.
At the moment, 33,000 teachers are employed by universities and colleges in
the province, constituting a shortage of 14,000 teachers according to China's
recommended ratio of teaching staff to students now set at 1:17.
Meanwhile, the 57,475 senior middle school teachers now working in the
province will fall far below the 100,000 required to meet national standards in
2005, when it is estimated that the number of senior middle school students will
reach 1.47 million.
