Barcelona shuts out AC Milan 2-0
( 2003-07-31 14:21) (Agencies)

Ronaldinho had a goal and an assist as Barcelona defeated defending European champion AC Milan 2-0 in an exhibition game Wednesday night.

Barcelona, coming off a 3-2 victory over Italian champion Juventus last weekend, improved to 2-0 on its preseason tour. It plays English champion Manchester United at Philadelphia on Sunday, while AC Milan plays Juventus on Sunday in the Italian SuperCup at East Rutherford, N.J.

Barcelona took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute on Ricardo Quaresma's goal.

Ronaldinho, acquired by Barcelona from Paris-St. Germain last month for $33.8 million, had six defenders in front of him when he sent a pass to Quaresma a few steps from the top of the penalty area. Quaresma split Cafu and Alessandro Nesta just inside the area and beat goalkeeper Dida with a low right-footed shot.

Ronaldinho increased the lead to 2-0 in the 51st minute. Taking a short pass left from Xavi outside the top of the penalty area, Ronaldinho curled a shot that glanced off Fernando Redondo and slipped inside the left post.

AC Milan missed several second-half scoring chances as Barcelona reserve goalkeeper Albert Jorquera made five saves. Starting goalie Victor Valdes made one first-half save.

Christian Brocchi's right-side try in the 75th minute was cleared off the goal line by Barcelona's Carles Puyol. About two minutes later, Andrij Shevchenko's long drive hit the top of the crossbar.

The game drew 45,864 to RFK Stadium.
