Tianjin port sees dramatic increase in imported vegetable oil
( 2003-07-19 16:28) (Xinhua)

The volume of imported edible vegetable oil through Tianjin Port topped 376,000 tons in the first half of this year, up 52.8 percent over last year's same period, according to the latest statistics from Tianjin customs.

The total value of the imported edible vegetable oil was 180 million US dollars, 1.1 times the figure for the corresponding period of last year.

The huge demand for oil on the Chinese market over the years has stimulated the import of edible vegetable oil, customs sources said.

The imports included 255,000 tons of palm oil and 121,000 tons of bean oil, up 9 percent and 9.1 percent respectively over the same period of last year.

Of the total imported vegetable oil, 178,000 tons, or 47.2 percent of the total, were imported by foreign-invested enterprises, 164,000 tons were imported by state-owned enterprises and 33,000 tons by private enterprises.

The imported oil mainly came from Malaysia, Argentina, Indonesia, Brazil and the United States.
