Uygur medicine sparks interest
( 2003-07-15 09:26) (China Daily)

Telling the world about the effectiveness of traditional Uygur medicine will be the focus of an international conference to be held next month in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

One of the main reasons for holding such a conference is to strengthen exchanges between Uygur medicine and the outside world, said Kurax Mahsut, vice-chairman of Xinjiang government.

He made the remarks at a Beijing press conference ahead of the meeting which will be held from August 18 to 21 in Urumqi, capital of the autonomous region.

The regional government will provide a host of favourable policies - including tax privileges - for people who seek co-operation with counterparts in Xinjiang to develop Uygur medicine, research and medical services, Mahsut noted.

With a history of more than 2,500 years, Uygur medicine has formed its own theoretical system and clinical techniques with the special characteristics of the Xinjiang region, well known for its agricultural products including fruit, a clean and beautiful natural environment and a colourful ethnic culture.

Meanwhile, the conference is held under the favourable conditions following the 56th Session of the World Health Assembly held this May, said Li Zhenji, deputy director of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, at the press conference.

The assembly adopted the World Health Organization Global Strategy on Traditional Medicine and the resolution focuses on the development and exchange of the traditional medicine around the world, Li noted.

This conference which was jointly sponsored by Li's administration and the Xinjiang government is a concrete action to implement the WHO resolution, Li added.

More than 150 experts and officials from various regions of China and 12 other countries and regions of the world, such as Germany and Japan, will attend the conference which has collected about 580 papers of Uygur medicine and other traditional medicines.
