Road accident kills eight in Sichuan Province
( 2003-07-07 15:58) (Agencies)

Eight people were killed Saturday in a road accident in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The accident occurred around 16:15 (GMT0815) when a white van carrying 15 people slipped into a 60-meter deep ravine on a road under construction in Ganluo County of Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Liangshan.

The accident, which is still being investigated, also injured four people, but three jumped out of the vehicle and were unhurt.

The cause of the accident has been attributed to the torrential rains which lasted for several days and destroyed the roadbed.
