Torrential rain hit eastern, central China
( 2003-07-06 09:45) (Xinhua)

Torrential rain Saturday hit Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, and Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province, causing inconvenience to the cities' traffic and people's lives.

Till Saturday noon, the rainfall in Nanjing had reached 194.5 millimeters, a record high in 20 years, said officials with the local flood control authorities.

Nanjing's main avenues were all flooded by the rain water and many cars and buses broke down while pedestrians had to wade through flooded streets.

In Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province in central China, it started raining around 8:00 p.m. Friday and as of 2:00 p.m. Saturday, the precipitation totaled 81 millimeters. The city's urban areas were flooded to varying degrees.
Local governments have used water pumps to drain the rainwater inside the cities and as of press time, traffic in the two cities had resumed.
