Demand for mobile units in China is strong: Wavecom
( 2003-07-03 09:29) (Xinhua)

Internal demand for mobile phones on the Chinese mainland is still very strong, and the customers there are desiring more than just voice communication when choosing a mobile phone.

Didier Dutronc, managing director of Wavecom APAC, a France- based company, made the remark at a news briefing Tuesday when launching its new technology, the Compact Phones Development Lab - a complete wireless technology solution designed to enable mobile phones to become compact, multi-featured and versatile communication units.

Dutronc said that in the wake of the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the production projects on the Chinese mainland are now returning to normal to bring production back to a level which can satisfy the demand of mainland customers.

"Just because the internal demand is still quite stronger, stronger than that in Europe or the United States, so before we see a flat market, our market share in the Chinese market will be bigger and bigger.

According to a recent survey on mobile feature preferences of the Chinese end users, which was cited by Duronc during the press briefing, 29.4 percent of Chinese users surveyed said they enjoy the digital camera function attached to a mobile unit, MP3, 23.2 percent; Chinese character input, 11 percent; image downloading, 11 percent; voice dialing function, 10.4 percent; polyphonic ringing tones, 9.3 percent, etc.

According to a press release issued by the company Tuesday, the Chinese hand-set manufacturer, the Guangzhou Soutech Group Technology Company, has already created a number of brand-new mobile phone models using the just-launched technology, and it is also planning to create a light and compact ladies' phone designed to be worn around the neck.

Wavecom is one of the leading providers of integrated technology solutions for wireless voice and data applications. It provides both software and hardware elements necessary for developing truly innovative wireless devices, as well as the development tools and services needed to bring them to market quickly easily.
