Shanghai Lupu Bridge opens to traffic

Workers put finishing touches to Lupu Bridge in Shanghai during a press preview on the eve of its opening June 27, 2003. The 2.2 billion yuan (US$266 million) Lupu Bridge project will open on June 28 and will become the world's longest steel arch bridge with a span of 550 metres (0.35 miles), surpassing the 518-metre long New River Gorge Bridge bridge in the US state of West Virginia.   [Reuters]
