Two NPC deputies lose seats for corruption

Two deputies have been deprived of their seats in the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislative body of China, for committing crimes.

The Ninth NPC Standing Committee at its 30th meeting, which concluded Monday in Beijing, announced the two deputies were Li Jingwei, former chairman and general manager of the Guangdong Jianlibao Corporation, a well-known sports drink company, and Sang Yuechun, former deputy to the Ninth People's Congress of Jilin Province andlegal representative of Changchun Jigang Group.

The announcement said Li was accused of embezzling 3.31 million yuan (401,000 US dollars) from public funds.

Sang was accused of crimes of intending to cause injury to others, framing up others, racketeering and the obstruction of public duties.
