Premiers of China and Romania pledged to give more impetus to bilateral trade on Thursday.

Premier Zhu Rongji met his Romanian counterpart Adrian Nastase in Beijing and suggested that the two countries expand economic co-operation so that their economies complement each other.

He added that the departments in charge and the two countries' joint committee on trade and economic co-operation should provide overall guidance to the co-operation and plan it well.

The two governments should provide information and support to back up the co-operation between enterprises more effectively, said Zhu.

They should also organize and participate in more bilateral and multilateral trade fairs, seminars and trade talks, he added.

Official statistics indicate that the trade volume between the Chinese mainland and Romania was US$298 million in 2000.

Zhu said the level of trade was low and unbalanced.

He told his Romanian guest that the Chinese Government attaches great importance to the development of trade and economic ties between the two countries.

Nastase described bilateral trade ties as having "a lot of potential."

He said that his government values such co-operation and he expressed the desire to raise this co-operation in economy and trade to the same level as good as in the political field.

The Romanian leader arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a four-day working visit to China.
