Dense fog delays flights in Shanghai
( 2002-01-14 11:23 ) (8 )

Air traffic at Shanghai's two airports came to a halt Sunday morning, because of heavy fog.

More than 100 flights were delayed at the city's Hongqiao and Pudong airports, which temporarily closed as visibility was as low as 50 meters.

Flights were resumed at about 9:50 am when visibility improved.

Meteorologists say the fog was caused by abnormally warm weather. The temperature on January 11 rose to 18.7 degrees Celsius, a rare phenomenon in winter. The warm weather has caused excessive water vapor in the air.
