US investigators find American cockpit voice recorder

Investigators have recovered the cockpit voice recorder from the American Airlines plane that crashed after taking off from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday, ABC News and CNN reported.

The recorder could provide critical details about events aboard the plane before it plunged to the ground. The reports, citing National Transportation Safety Board officials, said the recorder was recovered from the wreckage and taken to Washington for analysis.

Officials have said initial information indicated that the crash was an accident and not related to the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States.

American Airlines flight 587 was bound for Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, with 251 passengers on board and nine crew members. Officials said the bodies of at least 225 people have been recovered and eight people on the ground were reported missing.
