Japan admits Fujimori guilty of corruption, human rights violations
( 2001-10-23 11:07 ) (8 )

The Peruvian government acknowledged on Monday the Japanese government's admission that former President Alberto Fujimori was guilty of corruption and crimes against humanity.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi conceded, while meeting with Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo at the 9th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, that Fujimori would be tried in Japan because he is a Japanese citizen.

The two leaders also agreed to maintain a direct and permanent telephone line to follow up on the criminal process against Fujimori.

Peruvian Prime Minister Roberto Danino said on Monday that the Japanese admission was a slight improvement considering the previous position which gave Fujimori almost complete immunity.

However, Danino said in declarations from Madrid to Peruvian radio that he insisted Fujimori be brought to trial in Peru by Peruvian judges, under Peruvian law, because he committed crimes in Peru.
