More US reserves called up to active duty

More than 600 army reservists were called to active duty on Thursday, raising the total mobilized for the US war on terrorism to more than 16,200, the Pentagon said.

The latest group consisted almost entirely of military police from reserve units around the country, it said.

After terrorist attacks on New York and Washington September 11, President George W Bush authorized the Pentagon to activate up to 50,000 reserves, mainly for duty inside the United States defending against further attack.
