Exhausted pop star Carey suffers relapse
( 2001-09-07 13:42 ) (7 )

Pop star Mariah Carey, who was admitted to a clinic last month after suffering a nervous breakdown, has suffered a relapse, the Daily News reported on Thursday.

The New York newspaper quoted unidentified music industry sources as saying Carey, 31, had been admitted Tuesday to UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.

"She has had an emotional setback," the newspaper quoted one of its sources as saying.

Carey's spokesman Cindi Berger, asked about the Daily News report that her client had been hospitalized in Los Angeles, said, "I have no comment."

The singer and actress, one of America's most successful solo artists with more than a dozen No. 1 singles in her career, postponed an ABC News TV interview she had been scheduled to give this week.

"The only comment I have is that I did postpone her interview with Barbara Walters because she needed more time to rest," Berger said Thursday.

An ABC spokesman said Wednesday that the interview with Walters, which was due to air on Sept. 12 on the news magazine show "20/20," had been put off indefinitely.

Carey was released from a Connecticut rehabilitation clinic on Aug. 7 after undergoing two weeks of treatment for what her publicist described as an "emotional and physical breakdown."

Two days after she left the clinic in August, her Virgin Records label said it had delayed the release of her new album, "Glitter," the first under a lucrative new contract, for three weeks.

The album doubles as the soundtrack for an upcoming movie of the same name which stars Carey. The opening of the film, from 20th Century Fox, was recently pushed back by three weeks to Sept. 21. ABC is owned by Walt Disney Co.
