Tremor rattles southwestern Chinese town

An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale caused damage in China's southwestern province of Yunnan on Tuesday morning but there were no immediate reports of deaths, local officials said.

"There have been no death reports so far," said one official in the mountain town of Donghua, near the epicentre.

"All 25,000 residents of the town were affected by the quake, which battered some farmhouses, but it is unlikely to cause severe losses or casualties," the official said.
