LIAONING Ban of cigarette, alcohol sales to minors Shenyang municipal government in Northeast China's Liaoning Province issued a regulation forbidding the city's stores from selling cigarettes and alcohol to people younger than 18. The new regulation is effective today. Shenyang becomes the first city in China's mainland to introduce such a regulation. SHAANXI Bottle explosion injures old woman A 62-year-old woman was seriously hurt when a bottle of beer exploded in Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, on Saturday, morning, Guangzhou based New Express News said. Cui Xiuli wanted to put the bottle of beer into a refrigerator when it suddenly broke. Cui was immediately sent to hospital for treatment, where she received 10 stitches for a 7-centimetre-long wound. HENAN 46.4 kg watermelon wins championship A 46.4-kilogram watermelon won at a watermelon contest at Henan University of Agriculture on Sunday, Guangzhou-based Information Times reported. More than 800 watermelons were entered in the contest. The owner of the water melon, Zhu Liusheng, won a big screen TV. JIANGSU 2 men die in bid to save a pig Two men died during their attempt to save a pig in Tongzhou of East China's Jiangsu Province earlier this month, according to Guangzhou Daily. The victims were 48-year-old Wang Yixiang and his uncle Wang Maotian, 64. Wang Yixiang found his pig had fallen into the septic tank and jumped in to pull the pig out. His uncle followed. They were overcome by poisonous gases and fainted. They died after being sent to a hospital. 65-year-old has plastic surgery A 65-year-old woman who had an operation to have her wrinkles removed in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, has received plenty of media attention, the Guangzhou Daily reported. She is said to be the oldest plastic surgery patient in the city. The university professor looked ten years younger after the operation, the newspaper said. Her husband fully supports her decision and accompanied her to the hospital. Women banned from naked sunbathing Two young foreign women who were sunbathing naked on the roof of a nine-floor building, were ordered to put their clothes on by police in Wuxi in east China's Jiangsu Province on Thursday morning, the Guangzhou based Information Times reported. Many people gathered to look at the two women, who were members of a Russian dancing troupe which is performing in the city. The women said they did not mind the stares but the policemen still insisted they wore something in public. ZHEJIANG Cheated husband gets 10,000 yuan A husband was awarded 10,000 yuan (US$1,200) in compensation from his unfaithful wife in Changxing County of East China's Zhejiang Province, according to sina.com. The plaintiff, surnamed Huang, 41, said his 36-year-old wife, Mo Chengxue, had sexual affairs with other men earlier this year. Huang asked for 30,000 yuan (US$3,614.45) compensation in the divorce. According to the new Marriage Law, divorce due to spousal misconduct entitles compensation. FUJIAN Father suspected of killing his son A man was arrested on charges of killing his six-year-old son in Rongchun County of East China's Fujian Province on Sunday, Guangzhou-based Southern Metropolis News said. According to neighbors, the accused, Zhang Wenwang, 31, is lazy and bad-tempered and often beat his wife and son. Zhang used a rod to beat his son on the head on July 4 because he would not stop crying. Then he whacked his son with a kitchen knife, said the police. JIANGXI 2 old women, 1 boy killed in fireworks blast Three people were killed in a fireworks explosion in Leping of East China's Jiangxi Province, Guangzhou-based New Express News said. Two older women were making fireworks at home for a village factory on Saturday morning when the explosion took place. One died immediately and the other died after being sent to a hospital. A boy playing nearby was also killed. GUANGXI Schools found guilty of illegal fee collection Four middle schools in Quanzhou in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were found to have illegally collected more than 850,000 yuan (US$100,000) in fees since the beginning of the year, the Guangzhou based New Express News said. The money was distributed among the teachers and staff. The headmasters of the four schools have been punished and the schools have been required to return the extra fees to their students. HUBEI Teacher sentenced to death for rapes A middle school teacher was sentenced to death for raping girl students by Jingmen Intermediate People's Court in central China's Hubei Province last Saturday, according to a report from sina.com. Cui Quanbing, 47, was convicted of eight counts of rape for incidents dating to June, 1999. All his victims were younger than 16. Cui was detained earlier this year when parents of victims reported him to police.
