Chorus concerts

Two choir concerts will be held at the Beijing Concert Hall, featuring many of the most loved choral pieces in the world.

The concerts will be jointly performed by the Collegiate Chorale of the University of Colorado, and the Students£¿Chorus from the Central Conservatory of Music in China.

The concerts will be conducted jointly by Timothy Snyder and Yu Lei.

Jazz music

People in Beijing now can enjoy typical classical jazz and jazz classics performed by Carlos Sanchez Vizan from Italy and Christophe Lier from France.

Vizan has evolved into one of the leading European bass players during the last decade, combining his classical background with contemporary Afro-American music, and a deep interest in ethnic music. His partner Christophe Lier is a jazz pianist of rich musical experience, and is now a jazz piano teacher and improvisation teacher at the Beijing Contemporary Music Institute.

“Jazz is not perfect yet, but we are trying to play it perfect,£¿said Vizan as the two artists played what they call improvisational jazz music. They use their Western instruments to play Eastern music, adding to it their own understanding of the music and the culture it is from.

The audiences will be offered French-style delicacies while listening to the music.

Great pianist

World famous pianist Elisabeth Leonshkaya will soon visit China and give performances in Beijing at the Forbidden City Concert Hall.

She will first hold a concert in collaboration with the China National Symphony Orchestra, where they will play Schumann’s Piano Concerto, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 5.

Then she will present a solo concert featuring such classical works as Rachmaninov’s “Les Prelude,£¿and “Sonata in D major£¿by Schubert.

Feast for ears

The Philadelphia Orchestra will give a concert in Beijing, as part of its Tour of Asia that completes the celebration of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s 100th Birthday Season.

An added attraction at the concert will be the Orchestra’s co-operation with talented 18-year-old Chinese pianist Lang Lang, another young man following in the footsteps of Li Yundi, Chen Sa and Zuo Zhang to show the world Chinese people’s outstanding skills in playing the piano and interpreting music.

Malaysian dance

A Malaysian contemporary ballet company, “Dua Space,£¿will be invited to perform in the experimental theatre of the Beijing Modern Ballet Theatre.

“Dua Space£¿was set up in 1996 by two Chinese-origin Malaysian dancers to explore the inter-action between performers and audiences, dialogue among different arts, and the merger of traditional culture and modern art.

The two will present their creation “Two,£¿which presents a vision of life as an endless seeking.

Dancing with paper

A French ballet company led by a Chinese will travel all the way from La Rochelle in France to present its dances in Beijing.

The company, “La Compagnie Et Caetera,£¿features Peng Gang, a Chinese dancer and choreographer working in France, as its Art Director.

Peng worked for six years in Ballet Atlantique £¿Regine Chopinot National Dance Creation Centre in France.

He now brings his latest work, “Papier de Chair£¿(Dancing with Paper) to Beijing, which he created jointly with French artist Daniele Virlouvet.

Shaoxing Opera

The Chang’an Grand Theatre will organize a performance week featuring the art of Shaoxing Opera ({Yueju}).

Six troupes from Zhejiang Province will bring their repertoires to Beijing, performing such favourites as excerpts from “The Butterfly Lovers,£¿and “Snowfall in June.£¿

Violin from Singapore

Lee Huimin from Singapore will hold a violin recital at the Shanghai Concert Hall tonight. Lee debuted at the age of five in Singapore, and at the age of 14 was admitted to the Music Conservatory at Yale University under the Erick Friedman. At the recital, she will perform “Carmen Fantasy£¿and Brahms£¿“Humouresque£¿

Jin Xing’s dance
