Biz: Airlines shake up in-flight service

China's civil aviation authority said airline companies can decide not to provide passengers meal services on short flights due to safety concerns. Gu Xiaohong, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China's general affairs department, said at a news conference in Beijing on Monday that the draft regulations removing meal services gives airline companies more flexibility and boosts safety on flights of about an hour's length as attendants will not be distracted and will have more time to prepare for landing. He was responding to widespread complaints, especially online, that the CAAC was cutting back on services. Passengers' primary complaint was that flights used to serve dinner now only serve snacks.
