Ronaldo goes from agony to ecstasy

By Reuters in Paris | China Daily | Updated: 2016-07-12 07:55

Cristiano Ronaldo has won it all at the club level and has three world player of the year awards, but on Sunday he celebrated as never before - with tears of joy streaming down his face after Portugal beat France 1-0 to win the European Championship.

Two hours earlier, there had been very different tears after Ronaldo left the pitch on a stretcher, just 25 minutes into the final at Stade de France, his night over and his team left to fight on without their superstar captain.

Portugal's victory, thanks to a long-range goal by substitute striker Eder in the second period of extra time, was its first major trophy and will ease the memory of its painful loss to Greece in the Euro 2004 final - on home turf in Lisbon.
