2002-November

Reform of the culture industry started during the 16th National Congress of Communist Party of China.

2003-June

The experimental fields for reform of the cultural industry were decided.

(21 out of 35 cultural organizations included in experimental reform were publishers.)

(Chinese publishing going global was established as a key strategy for the entire industry.)

2004-March

First publishing groups established.

Launch of China Book International, a project promoting Chinese publications overseas.

2006-January

Policy statement, Opinion on Strengthening System Reform in Culture, issued.

2007-October

The 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

2008-May

Timetable for reform of the publishing industry released. The reforms were scheduled to be completed in three years.

2008-December

Phoenix Publishing & Media becomes first Chinese publisher to reach 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) in terms of both income and assets.

2010- December

Former State-owned publishing institutions reformed into enterprises.

2011-October

At the Sixth Plenary Session of the 17th CPC National Congress, it was decided that delegates should summarize progress of the reform of the cultural industry and plan for the future.

GAPP launched official plan for going global in the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15).
