Experts pore over radioactive contaminants in Japan

China Daily | Updated: 2011-03-23 08:04

HONG KONG - Authorities across Asia stepped up checks this week on Japanese imports after radioactive contaminants showed up in food and water in quake-stricken Japan following blasts at a nuclear plant last week.

Japan's police agency says nearly 9,100 people were killed and more than 13,800 are missing.

Those tallies are likely to overlap, but police officials estimate that the final figure will likely exceed 18,000 deaths.
