Boy regains use of severed hand

By Lu Chang | China Daily | Updated: 2010-03-25 07:50

After four hours of surgery on Tuesday, Liang Chuchu, a nine-year-old boy whose hands were hacked off by his adoptive schizophrenic mother last year, is closer to being able to move his right hand, according to Liang Wei, his adoptive father.

"Chuchu came out wearing a cast on his hand and was emotionally affected by the surgery," the father said. "The doctor said he can move his hand after the cast is removed, but it will still take two or three months of recovery treatment."

On April 1, while Chuchu was sleeping in bed, his adoptive mother, Guo Chunmei, cut his hands off with a kitchen knife and a pair of scissors. Guo has been diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia.
